[Kenwood] 850 issues

Lit up the 850 yesterday , and noticed that while listening to a net to checkin , the volume would cut about in half with erratic frequency , much like a dirty pot / volume switch .
No manipulation of volume , or other controls seem to affect .
While checking this out , I noticed the ALC in the fast position and receive  meter was steady at 10 over 9 , also that there was no response on meter to switching ALC to any positions .
So just shut down rig to look for info ?
