That may be true for you but not for all. It depends on why you are buying the 
radio. 

If for a collection, yes, original may be best. If for operating and DX chasing, 
then the mods are important. 

Some people may not feel they have the technical or physical ability to perform 
the mods themselves. 

It is all in the intended use or purpose of the equipment.

Some rigs have mods that help many things.
Problem is, who performed the mods?
There are mods for the Drake R4C that make it jump through hoops, but I'd 
never
buy an R4C with "all the mods"....as great as they might be!
