[Kenwood] Kenwood TH-79A Display Faded Out

My TH-79A display has faded to the point where characters are no longer visible.

This also happened a few years ago. I opened the radio to fix another problem 
and had to disconnect a ribbon cable that I think goes to the display.  After 
that the display worked better for a long time.  However, the problem returned 
gradually.  I have opened the case twice recently to mess with the ribbon cable 
again.  I 

tried to clean the cable with an eraser the first time it was opened, and 
cleaned the cable with DeOxit 

a second time.  Neither effort showed any improvement.

Can anyone help me?  The TH-79A is a nice radio except for the display.
