On all radios with an antenna tuner, you can turn it on or off.

I have a TS-480HX.  That's the radio with 200 watts output and no antenna
tuner.  In my vehicle, the antenna is a screwdriver type that can be
adjusted to work on nearly any frequency.  In fact, I got an automatic
tuning controller (N2VZ's Turbo Tuner), so I don't have to watch the radio
while it tunes the antenna to a new frequency.

Internal tuners are nice to have, but typically they can only "fix" a
mismatch of up to about 3:1.  Depending on your antenna, on some bands you
might have a much, much higher SWR and will need an external tuner anyway.
I also have a TS-2000 with internal tuner, for use at home, and because of
my choice of antennas, I never use the internal tuner.  On the other hand,
many people put up multi-band antennas with fairly good SWR on all bands,
and the internal tuner works great for them to "touch up" the match.

Just another question, if a radio has an automatic antenna tuner, can one
disable it and use an "external" antenna?

Sorry, one more question ... what does the 73 mean, I have seen it a lot
lately
...
