[Kenwood] TM-732A Memory

My TM-732A works fine in VFO mode. I cannot store frequencies into 
memory or use memory recall. I am suspecting that there is a mercury 
battery in there that needs replacing. Can anyone confirm that a dead 
battery would cause those symptoms? What kind of battery is in there? 
How hard is it to get to? Will it be obvious as soon as I take the 
covers off? Or do I need to disassemble the radio to find the battery?
