Oscar,

It's not your radio, its the antenna.

What you've described is perfectly normal. When the center conductor 
only is in position and before the threads are joined to the SO-239 on 
the rig, what happens is that the coax and antenna together act as a 
random length antenna. This allows the receiver to hear band activity.

Then, when you complete the connection, by screwing the threads down on 
the rig connector, you effectivly ground out the random length antenna 
and that mutes the receiver.

If your antenna was working OK then you would still hear normal band 
noise, but since you probably have an antenna problem, you hear nothing.

So, my advice is to check the antenna before you begin to think that the 
rig is bad.
