Seems to be a common problem with the 820.
When I got my first one it wouldn't operate above 350 which I suspect was
top end of bands that were used most.
Operating the knob back and forth cured it for a while.
Ultimately I fixed it by cleaning the contact to the variable capacitor
bearing in the vfo. Not to fear, there is a small access cover on the side
of the vfo. Remove two screws and you are in. I worked contact cleaner
around the bearing surfaces with a Q tip. Problem solved.

Subject: [Kenwood] TS-820S VFO issue
I am working on a newly acquired TS-820S that has been in storage for about
15 years. While it works in a fashion (receives and transmits), the VFO is
really erratic. In addition to jumping around in frequency and drifting a
lot, when I tune the analog dial above about 310 the received noise stops
and the display goes blank. I assume this is because the VFO has stopped
oscillating. When I tune the analog dial below 310 or so, the VFO starts
oscillating again and the display comes back one.
Before I tear into the VFO to clean everything, resolder any suspect solder
joints and apply some Deoxit to all metal contact surfaces, I am curious if
anyone on the list has experienced similar behavior.
Thanks in advance.
