[Kenwood] TS-930 shaft encoder question

When I had encoder problems on my TS-940 in 1998 the problem turned out to be a bad photo transistor. They can degrade with age; this one had high dark current. 



I can't remember how it looked on a 'scope, other to say it was crummy and couldn't be adjusted. The problem was intermittent tuning and sometimes the frequency would creep up or down without turning the knob.
