Get a copy of the TS820 service manual. It has a much better description of
the display unit as well as block diagrams.

Meanwhile the problem is a cold solder joint probably around IC18, 20, 22,
24,or 25. They are the IC's for the last digit.

Subject: [Kenwood] R-820 display problem

Ahoy! My R-820 has a problem that may be common to TS-820s and perhaps
other models. When I tune the radio, the least significant digit of the
display (.1 x khz) shows only the numerals 8 and 9, and is otherwise
off. This problem sometimes goes away after the radio remains on for
several hours. Then all numerals display normally as I tune across the band.

I have tried removing and (after inspection) re-installing the display
boards with star lockwashers, applying De-Oxit to the pins of all
circuit board connectors (helped with other problems, but not this one)
and installing star lockwashers elsewhere in the receiver to no avail.
While it’s not a problem that would keep me from using the R-820 on the
air, it is annoying. The R-820 service manual doesn’t cover this
symptom, so I have no idea what could be causing it.

Please advise me if you have insight on this problem.
