[Kenwood] Kenwood TS-870S strange happenings...

I had something similar to that happened and it almost drove me crazy until
I realized that I had some how or another hit the voltage control on the
power supply and the output voltage from the supply -- input to the rig --
was extremely low.  I adjusted the power supply back to about 13 VDC and the
problem went away.  So you might try checking your power supply.
