Yes you could be right about serial numbers. But, if it ever proves
necessary to replace the battery box in a TS930, due to corrosion etc. then
the 3 section battery boxes available from "Maplins" a High Street component
supplier in the UK are an exact replacement, and probably cheaper than the
Kenwood supplied spare part, they probably come from the same component part
manufacturer. I am sure that High Street component outlets in the USA will
carry the same imported stock.
The only work required is to replace the two wires of the original
connection to the battery box, by a new pair which terminate in a twin
"press stud" at the battery box end, to fit the twin stud connection on the
new battery box. The new box then fits exactly where the old one did, and
even the fixing screw holes line up. 73, John. G3JVC.

Then this "may" be a S/N "thing". Mine doesn't even have a place for a
screw to screw in, nor did it ever have a cover.
