There is a single screw just in front of the cover, holding the plastic
cover to the base panel....73, John G3JVC.

Added:  See picture on page 14 of Kenwood manual.  You can clearly see 
the three batteries in the picture.

My TS-930SAT, sliding back the metal cover for access to the cal SW and
VOX controls, simply reveals a three slot battery box with no cover.  It
takes three AA batteries that are connected in series.
