[Kenwood] TS-870 Power Output Menu "A7"

Oh boy!
The "PWR100W" is the menu item name just like "VOX.GAIN" is a menu item name. The number that is changing is the digital pot setting which is changing the output when your power out dial is cranked all the way up.

Be very careful because if you turn it up too much, you will be splattering all over the place and possibly damaging your rig.

The "hidden menu" is the modern equivalent of opening up the radio and twirling the pots and inductor slugs. Unlike the standard menu, there are no "factory" default settings for the hiden menu settings so if you change something, you'd better remember what the original value was or you will never know where it started and the only remedy is to send it in for a COMPLETE realignment ($$$). Unfortunately, there isn't a service manual easily available for download and you'd probably need more test equipment than you have to perform a complete factory alignment so be very carful when changing the settings.

I got a used FT-101E that had been totally messed up, but those radios were fairly easy to align and test with the aid of the service manual and it was a lot of fun tuning that radio back up to peak performance. That radio has a very big knowledge base on the net. There are far fewer 870 intenal experts whom you can ask about realigning than there are FT-101 experts.

This is one of the reasons for being super cautious about buying a used TS-870. Inexperienced hams are much more likely to fool with menu settings than they would be to taking the "golden screwdriver" to the circuit boards and it is much easier to inadvertantly mess this rig up without ever taking the covers off.

Subject: [Kenwood] TS-870 Power Output Menu "A7"

Folks: I am trying to adjust the power output of my 870 while in the A7 menu.

When I enter the A7 menu it says 100 watts on the far right,

when I turn the M.CH/VFO/CH this does not change but the 2 digit number on the left changes.

I do see that this does increase the power but it continues to say 100Watts on the right of the display.

Does anyone know what I should adjust this value to be?

Right now my A7 reads as follows

A7 A6 A6 PWR100W

Also, does the value to the right ever change from 100Watts

thank-you

Nick
