Rick,
The FMI is used for APRS and plotting stations. It can be used with several
Garmin GPS units but only works well with the Nuvi 350 (discontinued but
available as refurbished and occasionally new on some sites). All the other
units leave 'breadcrumbs' on the screen which fills up the memory and has to
be deleted. However, the FMI is proprietary Garmin code and not NMEA so
cannot be used directly with the Kenwood D700 or D710, if that is what you
are thinking. There is a Garmin to NMEA translator available that can be
used with the D700 and D710 but not in FMI mode.
If you want more information, check out tracker2 at yahoogroups.com and for
products see www.argentdata.com.
The OpenTracker2 and a Nuvi 350 along with the FMI interface cable and a
radio make a very nice setup for APRS and messaging. I use this setup in my
plane but I also have an AvMap Geostat V and Kenwood D710A for most of the
mobile work only because I found out about the other after the fact.

Has anyone tried the Garmin Fleet Management Interface cable? There are
comments that it will translate the USB port into RS-232 but I don't know if
it is proprietary or NMEA data. If NMEA, it could be interesting.
