[Kenwood] TM-V7 problems

Thanks for the replies.  This evening, I had an opportunity to check things
out a bit more.  I had good voltage at the mains connection.  Next, I
removed the remote head connector from the radio and mounted the head
directly to the radio.  It powered up and worked perfectly!  So, next I
re-connected the remote connector, and tried the head at the remote
location, and it worked fine.  I wiggled the connections, and couldn't get
it to mess up.  Maybe the connection just needed to be "exercised".  

I'll keep my fingers crossed tomorrow, and will report to the group how it
does.

I had a similar problem early on.  It was the mic.  Seems the factory mics
had the audio connected all the time.  The radio would pick up noises in the
vehicle and think it was getting remote commands.  You can remote that radio
and get it to do all kinds of things.  The fix was to modify the mic and
there is a service bulletin on that.

My radio did all kinds of crazy nonsense until I figure out what in the hell
was going on.  But it was exactly as you describe, the radio behaved as
though it had a mind of its own.  Hope your problem is that simple and not
something serious.

Hello, I own two TM-V7A dual band mobiles.  One I bought new about 5 years
ago, and use as a "base" radio, and the other one I bought used about 4
years ago, and have installed in my pickup.  Both radios have operated
flawlessly until last week.  I started having problems with the one in the
pickup, where the display would change by itself, and such the like.  I have
this unit "remoted", with the control head mounted on the instrument panel
of the truck and the radio behind the back seat.  I popped off the control
head and re-seated it and it appeared the problem was solved.  That is until
yesterday.  I noticed the same problem, and later noticed that the radio had
powered down.  I could not power it back up.  I tried the control head on
the other radio in the house, and it appears to be OK.  I haven't had a
chance to do any more trouble shooting yet, but plan to this evening.  This
morning, on the way to work, I was able to power the unit up by pressing the
power button a few times, but the display was "garbled" and it powered
itself down after a few seconds, after which I was unable to get it back on.

It seems like I recall seeing a small "paper-clip" sized reset hole in the
front panel of the radio itself.  I'll try that, I guess.  Does anyone have
any suggestions or ideas on this problem?  I plan on first checking power at
the radio (it feeds directly from the battery, but it's possible the wiring
has been damaged).  Next, I plan on putting the remote head directly on the
radio to eliminate the possibility of a problem with the extension cable.
After that, I'm at a loss.  I really like this unit, and it's features, so I
would like to be able to "nurse it back to health".
