[Kenwood] SM-220 Final Chapter

I did that as an experiment when I had an R4000 and my SM-220's (had 2 of them but sold them last fall). 

Get the 450 service manual, tap into the IF before it gets to the set of 8.83 MHz IF filters and run a wire to an RCA jack.  I don't recall if the SM-220 loaded the receiver down very much, but I had an FET amplifier that I could use as a buffer if needed.  Just for kicks I stuck an MFJ antenna preamp (I think it was the 1040) in the path between the R4000 and the SM-220 and saw a nice jump in signal strength when I tuned to ~8.8 MHz.  It uses a FET input and supposedly gives a 20dB gain. 



At the time, I had an 830, 870 and 940 so there was no need to use the SM220 with the R4000.  It was just an experiment.  I got rid of the SM220's because I traded the 870 for a 756Pro which does just about everything the 870 did with the SM-220.

Hello John, 

No, all is not lost. 

It is possible to bring the IF signal out of the TS-450, 
so it could be connected to the SM-220. 

I am sure that someone on this reflector could explain 
how this could be done.
