the mic you buy for the rig depends on two things: how much money you
want to spend and what kind of operating you want to do. Example--for
ragchewing, if on a budget, Shure SM58, a good solid dynamic mic used
widely. If you have money to spend, Heil PR40, a very good sounding
mic right into the 870 or even better (and more money) the
Electrovoice RE27. For ham 3 khz SSB operating the SM58 is probably
good enough. For chasing dx and contesting a heil mic with the HC5
element is a good choice I think.
