[Kenwood] TS-940 issue

I just came into a what one gentleman said was a working 940SAT.  When  I 
turn on the radio the lights come on and the frequency read out is nothing but  
dots. If I press the on/off button a number of times it does seem to come on.  
After a short heating period it seems to be ok. While in the non working  
condition if I hit any of the band buttons the right frequency does show up than  
goes back to dots. Anyone have any thoughts?   When the frequency  readout 
initializes the radio operation is normal. Love the radio..just a minor  issue
