[Kenwood] Kenwood TS850 - improved audio quality and reduced output

Hello Peter,

What do you mean by

"No matter what I do, it is impossible to reach
the magic 100 watt on the ALC meter"

First, ALC does not indicate of how much RF output power your transmitter is producing. ALC voltage is not like an RF driving signal, meaing the higher the ALC meter reading the higher RF output the final amplifier will produce.

ALC is a "control voltage" that is used to "control an earlier stage's gain" in order to bring the final amplifier back into a more "linear state". ALC voltage is produced when the final amplifier is "no longer operating in a linear state". Therefore, as the ALC voltage increases (higher ALC meter indication) the more "reduction in gain" of the earlier stage occurs.

After having replaced the HC5 microphone with the ATR30 by
Audio Technica,   the audio quality of my Kenwood TS850S has improved
considerably. As before I use the W2IHY 8 band equalizer and the EQ Plus by
W2IHY, and the settings on the equalizers are on the whole as with the HC5. Only
the processor gain and mike gain on the transceiver have been increased from 9
to 10 o'clock.
While audio quality has improved, output has gone down
from 100 to about 85 watt. No matter what I do, it is impossible to reach
the magic 100 watt on the ALC meter. Most surprisingly of all, the output
from the equalizers to the transceiver are higher with the ATR30 than with the
HC5. So where do the extra15 watt disappear into?

Thanks once again
