[Kenwood] Kenwood TS 950 on digital mode?

Happy Easter to all:
My question is with getting the 950 to operate in the digital mode.  The instructional manual for the TNC is not specific enough and the software manufacturer is the same. The Kenwood manual isn't much better. My problem is, I feel confident all is hooked up correctly, when I type my text into the window I send out with I don't seem to get a continious response on the radio each time.  For instance, I type CQ and my call sign and hit one of several methods to get the text out onto the air, my antenna tuner shows the RF Watts meter that has a deflection of power going through, the meter in the radio responds some times and mostly doesn't respond what RF watts are getting out of the radio.  I am working in USB in digital mode. Can you tell from this what I am doing wrong with my Kenwood or do you need more information?  I am stuck in Pennsylvania.
I would really appreciate some help, PLEASE!
