[Kenwood] TS-940AT Modulation Settings

Though I have owned this radio since new in 1989, SN 40020, it seems that
for a good number of years my memory for the settings on mike gain and those
of the processor have been very low on the dial. Higher readings especially
with the processor in results in poor audio reports.

The knob settings with processor out are mike gain at "2" and with Processor
in the in is set at "2" and the out is set at "3" yielding ALC within the
red zone and about 10 to 12 db compression.

Does this make sense for nominal settings? I can't find an internal master
mike gain control so I'm wondering if the MC-43 hand mike may just have
excessive gain? I don't have another mike to try. Since both modulation
paths seem to adjust similarly, I am inclined to suspect the mike.

This 940 is a wonderful radio otherwise never having exhibited any problem
especially the intermittent problems so often reported by others.

Thanks for your observations and/or opinions.
