[Kenwood] TS-520 - removing VFO from chassis

I have a TS-520 that works fine when the VFO is in the lower frequencies but
above 300 on the dial, the VFO is intermittent and asks as if the plates on
the tuning capacitor were shorting. When working, the signal sounds
unstable.

I need to get the VFO out of the unit but I can not figure out how to get it
out with the long shaft. The Service manual has a procedure but I tried to
follow it and still could not get it out. 
Has anyone been able to remove the VFO in a TS-520? Any help on the subject
appreciated.
