Hello group.
How hot should C3 (One of the two large electrolytics) on the AVR board
get? A friend came over this afternoon and helped me do a final check out
to get this rig on the air and we did a little transmitting, on and off over
the course of an hour. Keyed up for 10-20 seconds at a time, 50Watts max,
overall little transmit time.
There was a little "hot electronics" smell, not overwhelming, just enough
that we both noticed it. I pulled to cover off to look things over with a
infrared temp gun. I noticed this cap was quite hot, much more than the
other of similar size on the board. I have not noticed any previous smell
or excessive heat in the past week or so (receive only).
I turn the unit off let it cool to ambient and then power it back on, C3
starts to heat fairly rapidly and stays 20F hotter on average than it's
mate, all this without transmitting. Peaked in the 120F range when I
finally decided to turn it off after testing the voltages at CN2.
Voltages on CN2 were pretty close to what the service manual said.
Thoughts?
