Hi John,
The CTSS encoder is used to transmit subaudible tones. These are sometimes
necessary to access FM repeaters. The encoder can be set to any of many
standard tones. These tones are normally below the hearing range of the
average person.
The filters are used to provide more narrow bandwidth in the receiver.
Without looking them up, I'm not sure if all of those are compatible with
the 450. The Kenwoods have to I.F. stages and often have optional filters
available for either stage. Those below 1 kHz are for CW and above 1 kHz
are for SSB. If you are an active DXer or contester, filters more narrow
than stock are often very helpful. 500 Hz is usually enough for CW although
some folks like the 250 Hz filters. I have 250 in my TS-940S but I'm
thinking about going to 400 or 500 Hz. On SSB, the 1.8 kHz filter is great
in crowded band conditions (IE contests!).
