Ben,
I've been running the 480HX (200W version) in my pickup for 3 years and
it has never missed a beat. I upgraded from a TS-50 when I bought the
truck, as the TS-50 just would not fit in the new vehicle.
The TS-50 was simple to operate and I must say that so is the 480.
There are a lot more features in the 480 but the ones you use the most
are readily accessible.
I do not think I would like the detachable head for use in a home
station, but that's just my personal bias. As a mobile rig, it is
simply fantastic. The one complaint I do have is the noise reduction.
I found that the built in DSP noise reduction degraded the audio too
much for my ear and I went back to using my Clear-Speech speaker in the
mobile. The Noise Blanker and Dynamic Noise Limiter are terrific and
help to tame the ignition noise from the pickup's engine.
I cannot tell you how it compares to the TS-2000 or the TS-570 as I have
never owned either of those radios. I do run an 870 in the home station
and do not find that the 480 lacks in any way shape or form when
compared to the 870. Understand that I am not a contestor, nor am I
much of a CW operator. I do get into DX pileups from the mobile and
have an excellent success rate with 200W and a screwdriver antenna.

Subject: [Kenwood] TS-480SAT
I just upgraded my license to General and I'm looking for something to
get me on the air. I've been doing a lot of reading and it looks like
folks have been very happy with the TS-480SAT. I'm looking for
something that is easy enough to use to get me started, but has the
features to keep me happy as I learn. If anyone would care to comment
it would be greatly appreciated.
73,
Ben
