[Kenwood] TM-D710a and USB <-> serial converter

Hello from a new member of the list.

 

I have a TM-D710a and I want to program it from my laptop which has no
serial port (no surprise there).  For other radios, including a TM-V7A, I
use a USB to serial converter and it has been flawless.

 

Not so with the '710.  I have been unable to make it work.  I see (via LEDs
on the converter) that data is going both ways, yet the software says it
isn't responding (latest version).  The same cable works to copy (via the
com connector) the packet data, so it isn't all bad news.  I suspect that it
is a timing issue in the software.

 

I am not a total idiot when it comes to this stuff, I checked the COM port
assignments and they are fine.  Again, this cable works with programming
other radios, but not the '710.  Yes, I tried Kenwood, they were not helpful
and directed me to this group.

 

Has anyone come up with a foolproof method (other than using a real serial
port, but I don't want to uninstall the radio and bring it to a desktop
every time I want to dump in a new program)?
