All that and you never mentioned which of the many Kenwood radios you are

If I remember correctly you have a TS-940s? 
 
The absolute best thing that you can do is to contact Cliff at AVVID in 
Dallas Texas.

Yeah, you will pay a bit for shipping and repair, but Cliff will fix your 
Kenwood and fix it right. 
 
Either that or you sit there for another year and a half looking at a 
non-functional radio. 
 
Your choice... Personally based on your initial message, I would say that 
the repair of this radio is beyond your capability. No hard feelings, I had 
to admit the same thing about five-six years ago when my '940 became 
squirrelly. Cliff fixed it, and it's been rock solid ever since. 
 
In fact, I'm getting ready to send him my TS 711a also.
