My take is VERY simple!

Cliff ran THE Kenwood Service Center.

I'd go with HIS suggestion!

Not to mention that the Baking Soda routine is used in Car Battery 
leakage - Also Coca-Cola.  I would NOT want EITHER in MY Kenwood!
