 Bill, W4ZV, is correct; i.e. the first digit is the year ( 5xxxxxx = 1985 )
and the next two digits are the week of the year in which the radio was
produced. I've verified this several times by looking for the most recent
production date code stamped on any of the integrated circuits ( e.g. 8526 =
1985, 26th week ). The radio couldn't have been produced until after the ICs
were produced :-)

 The business about subtracting two from the first digit may apply to some
Kenwood series, but not this one.
