[Kenwood] Connecting Kenwood SM 220 to a TS 830 Radio

Kevin,

The most common four connections are:

1) To monitor your transmitted RF envelope (assuming no amplifier) - 
connect the output of the TS-830S to the RF INPUT SO-239 on the rear 
panel of the SM-220.  Then, connect your antenna (or tuner, etc.) to the 
RF OUTPUT SO-239 on the SM-220.  Put the Function switch in the 
MONI/TRAP mode, and the SWEEP Range to 10-100 (typically).  Adjust the 
RF ATT as necessary.

2) To monitor your amplifier's linearity via a trapazoid pattern, 
connect the output of the TS-830S to the DRIVE INPUT, connect the DRIVE 
output to the linear input, connect the linear output to the RF INPUT, 
and then the RF output to your antenna/tuner.  Set the function to the 
MONI/TRAP mode, and the SWEEP RANGE to TRAP.  Adjust the RF ATT as 
necessary.

3) To monitor the band activity above and below your transmitted signal 
(bandscope, pan adaptor, etc.): Connect the IF 1 output of the TS-830 to 
the RCA jack IF INPUT on the rear panel of the SM-220.  Set the FUNCTION 
switch to BAND SCOPE, and the SWEEP RANGE to 10-100 (typically).  Set 
SCAN WIDTH as desired, and adjust the V.Gain as desired.

4) To monitor the narrow-band IF envelope in the TS-830S's receiver, 
connect the IF 2 output of the TS-830S to the V.INPUT of the SM-220 
(front panel), and set the FUNCTION to OSC/RTTY.  Adjust V.ATT and 
V.GAIN as desired.
