[Kenwood] Questions about the Kenwood TM-D700A

Hi,

 

I am a new Ham Radio Operator with a brand new Kenwood TM-D700A radio.  I am
also new to this mail-list but was referred by technical support at Kenwood
to get answers to some of my questions about this radio.  (It seems strange
to me that a manufacturer would refer me to a email list server instead of
answering themselves, but whatever.)  The manual that comes with this radio
leaves a lot to be desired.  I find myself with more questions than answers
every time I read it.  Hopefully, I will have better luck here.  If anyone
can help me, I would really appreciate it.

 

Thank you for your help with the D700.  Here is my list of questions.  


Setup:  Kenwood TM-D700A installed in vehicle with a Garmin 18 GPS
connected.

 

1)       Waypoints - How does it work?

2)       After a location is saved (by pressing copy from the position
screen [POS]) to one of the five available memory banks, how do you access
it?  Will it show distance and direction of that saved location from current
position?

3)       Can you manually enter a set of coordinates and then have the D700
tell distance and bearing?

4)       When APRS is turned on, it starts receiving information from
various APRS stations at random.  It holds 40 stations in the "List".  Is
there any way to get the D700 to find a SPECIFIC callsign that may not be on
the list and pull up the details for that station?

5)       Do only APRS - radio broadcasted stations show up on the list or do
they include internet gateway connected stations?  I have a computer in my
house that is not connected by TNC radio.  It is however, connected by the
internet and using UIView32.  On the UIView32 maps from other computers
around the country, my home computer shows up as a fixed station.  However,
on the D700, my home station does not appear on the list.  Why?

6)       Can you select a distance range limit for the APRS stations that
are listed in the 40 "List"?  For example, can I tell it to only list
stations that are 50 miles away or shorter?

7)       What does a message alert sound like?  What does a bulletin alert
sound like?  Are the sounds different?  How can you tell one from the other?
There is a three tone (falling sequence) that is heard every once in a
while.  I have NO idea what it means.  Any ideas?

8)       What does "PM3" located at the top right hand corner of most
screens mean?  It is not the big PM button.  It is located at the very top
line and at the very right end in small print.  (The manuals do not show
anything in that space in their illustrated examples and there is NO mention
of it anywhere in the print)
