The Kenwood HF rig's I've used ('450, '850, '690) have an adjustable VFO knob.  If you grip and hold the "front" of the knob, the rear of the knob (the section closer to the "face plate") can be turned - one direction "loosens" and the other direction "tightens".  Adjust to your liking.
