Roger,

I suspect that the problem is the relays in the relay-switched filter
board in the final cage.  They develop high resistance over time
because, as the circuit is designed, there is no sealing current being
passed through the contacts to keep them clean.

I don't know what test gear you have so here is a simple test that
will isolate the filter unit. Turn off the rig and remove the covers.
I don't have the manual handy but , IIRC, there is a small coax cable
coming from the switched filter board in the final cage that plugs
into the receiver board.  Unplug the cable and, using  using a jumper
clip, connect your antenna to the coax socket on the receiver board.
Turn on the rig.  If the signals are now strong you have dirty relays
in the switched filter unit.  Turn off the rig and reconnect the
cable.

If the above test indicated that the filter relays are dirty then you
need to read the Kenwood service bulletin, below, that describes the
easy fix.  The first step is to apply a sealing current from an
external power supply.  You don't have to disassemble anything for
this step!  It is up to you if you want to install the maintenance
circuit to keep a sealing current on the relays at all times.

If bypassing the relay section did not improve the signal strength you
will need to do more testing.   Let the group know the results of the
above.
