I am not sure what these shafts are, but if they are straight shafts, you
might look into the stems from olde mobile CB antennas. They are made of
various materials. Remove the jacket, unwind the wire, and sand the shaft.
Usually can be had for free around truck stops and CB shops. The defect is
that the wire breaks at the bottom.
