[Kenwood] Programming THF6A VIA Computer?

I've installed the Kenwood software, set the THF6A menu to PC, connected the 
cable with power off as instructed, turned the power on after all is 
connected, and I get a "communication time out error" whenever I try to read 
from or write to the radio.

This has happened with 3 different computers.

I know the serial ports are good, and are running at the standard Windows 
settings.

Anyone have any ideas of what to check next?
