John,

I bought one to replace my TS-50 in a mobile installation. There was
nothing wrong with my trusty TS-50; it just wouldn't fit in my new truck.
The remote head was the ideal solution for my new mobile installation.

Frankly, I love it. I bought the HX version since I use a screwdriver and
don't need the tuner. As a mobile rig, it's great. The noise blanker and
Dynamic Noise Limiter take care of the ignition noise from my truck very
well. The extra 100W comes in handy, especially on 75M. The receiver is
certainly sensitive enough. I don't have any accessory filters, and don't
operate CW mobile, so can't comment on the CW performance. One thing I
don't like is the tuning knob. It could be heavier for my taste. The
TS-50 had a better feel. I don't use the DSP noise reduction. I think it
has a negative effect on the intelligibility on SSB. I prefer to use my
Clear Speech DSP speaker instead. It does noise reduction and beat
cancellation automatically. You have to select Noise Reduction or Beat
Cancel on the 480. You can have both, but they really affect the received
audio negatively. I keep the Clear Speech turned on all the time.

I don't think I'd like it as a fixed station rig because of the separate
control head. I think that's a stupid arrangement for a fixed rig, but
that's just my opinion. I've had absolutely no problem with the rig and
have had it about a year. It lives in my vehicle which means it's
subjected to extreme temperature variations. As a mobile rig, I'd
recommend it to anyone.

Anyone got any comments on this radio good or bad?
