The BS-8 Pan Display is an interesting toy, but is of limited use. It
essentially displays signals as vertical lines along a baseline of
frequency.
The "specific" graticule is just a single horizontal baseline with a
single vertical line in the center, and isn't really necessary. The
baseline represents either a 20 kHz or a 100 kHz range that is centered
on the frequency the receiver is tuned to, e.g., a signal that the
receiver is tuned to show as a "pip" in the center of the line. Each
signal within that frequency range is displayed along the baseline, with
taller vertical lines equaling stronger signals.
The sweep speed must be kept very low to prevent IF filter delay from
"stretching" the vertical lines into inverted "V's".
From a practical standpoint, unless you want to monitor 20 or 100 kHz
of a "dead" band, watching for a "pip" indicating a signal, (10M or
VHF/UHF,) the BS-8 really doesn't offer much. You could also watch for
"clumps" of signals indicating a pile-up, but it's more effective to
just tune around!
