[Kenwood] inter connection of kenwood TS-850 to computer

FAR Circuits makes a printed circuit board which includes the MAX232
chip and the opto-isolator chip. I think I paid about $12 US for it.
You have to supply a few resistors and capacitors, a box to put it in,
and a "wall wart", but it works great.
