[Kenwood] TS-940S Jittery VFO

Wouldn't you know that a tuning problem would show up within the first 
hours of a big contest??  :)

Suddenly tonight my main tuning know stopped working ... sorta.  I turn the 
know clockwise to increase VFO frequency and the frequency hardly moves and 
when it does it moves DOWN!  I can spin the knob in either direction and 
the frequency will jitter up or down in a random fashion.

However, if I physically pull the tuning knob toward me and place tension 
on it, it will tune relatively normally.

The VFO frequency will also jitter on its own without even touching the 
knob.  This works on VFO A and B, under both transmit and receive.

Can someone give me an idea what the problem might be and what it might 
take to correct it?
