Ron,
If it is a unit with a low serial number Kenwood may fix it for the cost of
shipping it to them. Several months ago I was given an early production TM-V7A
"parts donor" that had the dreaded defective display (many lines) as well as
intermittent TX/RX on both VHF and UHF. I was able to repair the TX/RX
problems and, since the rig had been free, I called Kenwood to learn how much
it would cost to repair the display.
I was asked for the serial number of the rig and was informed that, due to the
low number, my unit would be repaired at no cost under warranty. I was also
told that I could save on shipping if I sent only the head and enclosed a note
that indicated this was a warranty repair and included the serial number of the
main body of the radio. I received the original head with a new display and it
was shipped back at Kenwood's cost. Not bad! Now I have the same rig in both
cars.
