[Kenwood] TH-D7A(G) Programming

I posted this once before, but still haven't made any progress, so thought
I'd try again.  Maybe someone new has an idea.

 

I have a brand new (i.e. Christmas) Kenwood TH-D7A(G).  I built a PC
interface cable, then later purchased one from an independent vendor.  Both
check out electrically to the connection requirements as shown in the
manual.  My USB to serial converters works fine for everything including my
Kenwood TM-D700A.  However, for some reason the TH-D7 won't talk to the PC.
I've tried using a dumb terminal program, but don't see so much as a blip on
the screen even when I go to the packet setting on the TNC.

 

Anyone got an idea or a diagnostic routine I can try?  I hate to ship this
back if it's an operator error or some other easy fix.

 

Any help would be appreciated.
