Dave,
If the rig has not been used in a while you may need to check the wiring harness plug-ins these can give problems. They may need to be reseated. See if he left batteries in the holder for the memory back-up, if they have corroded acid can drip down on the digital board and give you problems. Be sure your in Auto mode and not thru and I kwow this made sound stupid, but is there a tuner in this rig, some did not have them.

I have an elderly fellow ham who has been inactive for about 9 years and has
a TS-930S. I was volunteered by our local group to check out his station
equipment and help him get back on the air. In the course of checking things
out, I found two problems with his TS-930S:
1. The Tune switch would not put the transceiver into AT tune mode. I have a
TS-440S, so i understand how the Kenwood AT mode should operate, but no luck
for me. My friend told me that after I left, the tune mode started working
again, but when I came back the next weekend it wasn't working again.
2. On the second visit, the rig had been turned on a few minutes when all of
a sudden the VFO knob seemed to quit working. After fiddling around for a
while, it started coming back into service intermmittently. After a little
while more, the VFO returned to normal operation and continued to be ok for
the duration of the testing and checkout.
I checked the Kenwood Web site for service bulletins. and the Kenwood
listserver archives, and haven't found anything that pertains to these two
specific problems. I'm wondering if these are known problems and, if so,
where I might find out something about the repairs.
Thanks and 73 to all,
