[Kenwood] TM-731A cross band help needed

  I recently picked up a TM-731A & did the mod to allow cross banding operation.  It appears to work fine unless I am using PL tones.  I set the 2m side of the radio with the correct offset & tone & I can use the 731 with no problems.  I then set a UHF simplex frex, put the radio in cross band mode & I am off.  The 2m Rx gets cross banded to UHF with no problems, when I Tx on UHF, I can see the 2m side transmit on the 731, but I am not getting into the repeater.  If I key the UHF simplex quickly & release it, I can sometimes "kerchunk" the repeater, but I can not get it to work in a usable mannor.
