[Kenwood] Modified VHF/UHF rigs

Wally:
    I much disagree with you statement. None of the ham radio vhf or uhf 
radio radios are designed for used in the commercial bands. For one 
thing, the PA module alone is designed for 144 to 148 mhz in the case of 
vhf radios. Also, when going above 160 mhz, most of those rigs the 
deviation will go way out of whack...........and rapidly increase to 7 
or 8 khz with a fair amount of distortion. I have seen many of those 
rigs come in for repair with blown PA's only to find that they had 
opened the rig up to transmit out of band. Let's face it as you only get 
what you're paying  for. The commercial rigs may be more money but heck 
the new ones now cover from 136 mhz to 174 mhz with excellent specs. I 
have only worked in mobile radio communications for over 45 years so I 
have a bit of an idea of what I'm talking about. Also, the commercial 
radios are now very reasonably priced so if one wants to operate "out of 
the amateur bands", spend the extra bucks and get a radio that's spec'd 
out to work properly right thru the whole band. I don't know if you have 
ever looked at the output of one of the ham band rigs on a spectrum 
analyzer when operated out of band but you will be surprised at all the 
garbage that is emitted on xmit when operated beyond it rated frequency 
range.  Just my 2 cents worth.
