This CW issue can be argued either way.  For me the bottom line is it's
a valuable tool during emergency situations.  You never know when an
occasion may arise where code knowledge could save lives.  dropping CW
from the ham license requirments just weakens our capability to respond in
case of dire emergency.

I ask the same question about military boot camp guy....     Why the
heck do we need six weeks of training in how to shoot and fight?   Just
give them a uniform and send em out to shoot, kill people and break things.

We all know WHY boot camp.   It is to instill DISCIPLINE.  Code serves
the same kind of purpose.
It shows who has the DISCIPLINE to study something in order to gain
something ... in this case, the something is a ham license.   It, like
boot camp, weeds out those who dont have it.....  and if you dont have
discipline enough to study and learn FIVE WORDS A MINUTE then  you
really MUST question whether a person deserves to be issued a license.
If they can discipline themselves enough to learn that slow a speed, I
have to question if they will have DISCIPLINE enough to obey any of the
other regulations.    HECK, I am an Advanced Class, not an Extra.  As a
result, I am restricted from certain 25 kc segments of certain
bands...   but, I'd like to believe that it is DISCIPLINE and self
control that keeps me from saying "Hell with the rules.  I want to work
a station there and I should be able to if I want"...

If someone lacks enough discipline to learn 5 wpm and just wants to be
able to punch the mic button whenever and wherever he wants .... THATS
WHY THE FCC GAVE UP THE CB CHANNELS..
SO YOU CAN DO THAT ...     WHATEVER CHANNEL AND WHENEVER YOU WANT.
And, you see the amount of DISCIPLINE that exists there....
