[Kenwood] TS-440S Display Troubles

I have a friend that has a TS-440S that acts kind of strange on 12 and 
15 meters.

While he is tuning the display shows the frequency, but as soon as he 
stops turning the knob the display goes blank. The rig operates fine but 
the display is blank.

Any ideas or fixes are appreciated.
