[Kenwood] TS480HX Low Power Output on SSB

I have a Kenwood Ts480HX which appears to be putting out very low power
output on SSB (CW/FM etc is the full 200W).
Power output suggests about 50W out only on SSB. This radio has been
installed in the car and I am happy that dual power cabling arrangement
works all OK. No dimming occurs with 200W out on other modes. 
 
The radio is certainly more receptive to high freqs (whistle into the
mic) etc but is very flat from a power out perspective with normal voice
patterns. I have done a full reset on the radio. The problem exists on
all bands.
 
Other than trying another mic (which I will borrow tomorrow) can anyone
suggest what maybe astray. (Hoping it is an operator problem but I fear
otherwise).
