[Kenwood] R-5000 unlock

A friend of mine has an R-5000 that seems to be exhibiting the infamous 
unlock condition. On initial powerup, it displays the series of ......
rather than the frequency display, then after it has warmed up for a 
half hour or so, it displays fine and the rig works as it should. Has 
anyone had any experience troubleshooting one of these? My friend tells 
me that the clock battery has been replaced, but that did not fix the 
problem.
