[Kenwood] SM-230 for RTTY Mark & Space Display

Herb, you need to feed the "Mark" and "Space" signals into the SM-230 from
your TNC. I use a Kantronics KamPlus TNC and there are provisions for
running the Mark and Space signals to an external source on the circuit
board inside the KamPlus, which I wired to a miniature stereo jack installed
on the back panel of the KamPlus and terminated a cable with the appropriate
mating connector as well as a pair of RCA Plugs on the opposite end for the
inputs to the SM-230. I don't believe there is a way to use this feature of
the SM-230 with software / sound card RTTY, but most of those programs have
a tuning indicator as part of the software itself. FYI, I use the KamPlus
hardware TNC + DX4WIN and the SM-230 as well as MMTTY with its software
indicator simultaneously for receive on real weak signals and you will be
amazed as to how one can outperform the print vs. the other and results tend
to usually be about 50/50 which will have the better copy performance here.
I always use the KamPlus for TX with true FSK to the TS-950SDX station here.
I have the AFSK output from MMTTY wired to another rig which I rarely use
for RTTY at present. Obviously I can't drive the SM-230 with that setup
either, thus the dual capabilities of the KamPlus and MMTTY receive are to
my advantage. I've only been on RTTY since '93, so in just a bit over a
decade, I have 304 confirmed out of 310 worked on RTTY and the SB-230 X-Tune
has been a real asset to me for many of those QSO's.
