I'm not sure why you mention that InRad's are a pain to install.  I have a
850's with three InRad filters and they were all "drop in" fits.  There's a
way to change the ceramic 2.7K filter in the 455KHz IF, but that's
definitely a DIY PITA job which requires some cable routing!

I have two '850's.  One filtered for CW and the other for SSB.  In the SSB
radio, I have InRad 2.1's in both IF's and an InRad 400Hz CW filter in the
first IF slot.  For the CW radio, I have a 2.1KHz InRad in the first IF and
a cascaded set of InRad 400Hz filters.  The InRad 400's are pretty sharp and
I could probably get by with just the one in the 8.83MHz IF and save the
455KHz IF filter for something else.  If you're planning to use the slope
tuning feature, then it's best to use a cascaded set of filters (two same
bandwidth filters, one in each IF).

Search the archives on "Inrad filter" and you'll probably find quite a bit
of info.  There's also a gentleman on the web that has a site with bandwidth
graphs of using cascaded filters with slope tuning vs using a narrower
filter.

Since you want SSB too, the only filter kenwood sells is a 1.8khz. I have
that filter. I like it. When uses with the twin PBT it wil isolate SSB 
signals very well.

   Even on CW if you narrow down the PBT it. works for CW. using the 1.8 
instead of the 2.7 with a cw filter is good too.
The 1.8 replaces one of the 2.7khz. So you wil have more like a 2.2 intead
of 
a 2.4.
I think it is a yk-88-1.8kc.

  You can have a nice narrow 2.3kc or less BW like the TR-7. The narrow 1.8 
will give you more choice in bandwidths.

  I know INRAD filters are better, but a hassle to put in.

   This is just my opinion. Ask around some more.
